Yeah.. i'm a bit confused by all this BS.

I'm kinda affected by all this, but kinda not. Let's say i want a super dooper gay cake for my birthday. Rainbows and unicorns and big dildos etc. the person who i want to make the cake is religious amd doesnt want to make my cake...
Ok.. i go to the next person... why would i want someone like that to make my cake? Or fund their business venture?
I woumd probably leave a shitty review, but thats it?

And let's be honest, in the last few years I did fund 2 very crude cakes for PSB / WAWMR events, and nobody batted an eyelid?

thats an interesting point Hazelnutty, say hypothetically, and we are talking hypothetically..., i used to work for a publisher back in the 90's and this guy got us to quote on his magazine, we won it and he then wanted us to print it, turns out a quite raunchy porn subscription magazine ( days before interwebz). our company said sorry no because they felt it wasnt in the companies publishing principles to publish any kind of pornographic material, and that could be considered offensive to some people publicly and staff in production especially that kind of, lets call it varied, imaginative and "graphic content".

The guy said ok no worries an went elsewhere. years later the company got sold and new management said yes, he paid upfront in a cash transfer, turns out theres good cash in porn. i think as duty of care they asked he staff if they would work on it and gave them the option to opt out of production which meant due to deadlines some of them could have lost afternoon and night shifts rates because they had to juggle shifts...

So by respectfully declining the job did we discriminate against his rights as a pornography publisher, and should he have had the right to make us print his pornography as freedom of speech? Even though we thought it was outside our moral duties as a publisher?

    hyperthetically speaking

    anyone?

So if we legislate that you have to marry same sex couples we are promoting dishonesty and lying as that is what will happen to prevent prosecution.

If we extend the loophole that is already there everyone can be honest and open.

I suspect within twenty years it will be a moot point anyway as we keep evolving and nobody will even talk to each other except via snapchat or what ever platform is in vogue at the time.

Can we get back to serious shit now like doing something about the economy and other minor items?

Oh wait still more political shit fighting about dual citizenship to get through yet.

You do realise the State gubmint can make religion against the law?

We may struggle to replace the volunteer and charity work some of the larger sects do however

This is partly why I was against using the same word. To me and I guess others it is part of religion. If the union had a different word, priests and celebrants COULD have said no, because they would not have offered THAT service.

I agree. If this passes, then you cannot discriminate. You can't hide behind religion. An analogy would be a religious person telling a policeperson to bugger off because they answer to a higher power, their God.

Yes, I have personally seen the darker side of people with strong religious beliefs but have always found them to be vastly outnumbered by better versions.

You don't need a different word or even the proposed changes to identify SSM in the Act. Provisions already exist that allow Ministers of Religion to refuse to solemise any marriage for whatever reason.

The sick idea of extending this legislated bigotry to other celebrants in the form of conscientious objection to gay unions should not get up.

As to religious people hiding behind religion, they already do.

Anyone needing the threat of a terrible afterlife to act with human decency toward others isn't really a decent person at all.

    How does it go?
You tell people there's an omniscient being who only exists in your mind and they believe you. Yet you tell the same people the paint is wet and they have to touch it.
The only thing wrong with a perfect ride to work is that you end up at work.

there is no god. but some people need that idea to help them cope with their reality, just like some people feel they need unions to help them in the workplace. each to their own.

The need to belong to a tribe outweighs any need to not look foolish in the eyes of their peers...the larger group ,in evolutionary terms, has always been the safest place to hide.

as an individual...you become the easiest target....see recent entertainment events..most of us are only human after all.
