Oh, that's right - the "nigs" comment has been deleted. Let's just pretend that never happened.

But yeah, it's me that's racist, of course (fuck me that old argument is getting tired)

As for drowning thieves - yeah, I have a problem with that - as someone else mentioned; if that's your thing, go live in Saudi Arabia.

I had fucking copper pipes stolen off my walls TWICE, but I never felt the need for fatal retribution. WAAAYYY too many people on here place their personal property above human life, which is a little disturbing.

Or it could just be that ole keyboard vigilante spirit...

Yeah, the pipe thief was caught (cop called me on Christmas Day to tell me - thanks! )

And also yeah, we seem to be becoming increasingly tribal rather than community oriented, and history has plenty of lessons as to how that ends.

And that's fine, it takes all sorts, some consider human life precious, others do not and they are perfectly within their rights to believe that also. Bare in mind that these kids weren't deliberately taken into the river and drowned and their demise was not through the actions of anyone other than themselves. Now while some might consider that tragic (and that's always been permitted) others see a chain of events that read like a beautiful poem (which is also fine). Because neither opinion had any bearing on the events leading up nor the outcome so it makes no difference what people believe in the slightest.

But taking offence to someone else's opinion is a bit like drinking poison and expecting them to get sick.

Well that will always exist, that's a given. The fine art of trolling and misdirection needs to be maintained, otherwise life would get very boring on a rainy day.

Finally there's also a two fairly monumental clues as to why it's wasted energy to take too much of this to heart... this is social media, as such it's pure concentrated bullshit. Secondly, it's in a thread titled "pub chat" effectively bullshit to the power of 10.

Yeah, I agree somewhat - but social media is having more and more influence these days, for better or worse. Unfortunately most of it is driven by emotive and uninformed impulses with little concern to the effects it might have in the community as a whole.

As for the old, trotted out Fry quote - I'm NOT offended, I just point out what I think is wrong with an opinion or an argument - which is then a debate. And people who use that quote to defend actions or comments that deliberately INTENDED to offend under the guise of "anti-pc" commentary are simply those that want to insult without consequence and hide behind sophistry.

Ranting, racist, vindictive diatribes like that of GM should be challenged (not simply censored) - but the fact is much of the substance of his comments remains in the thread but much of the counters have been removed. What is left changes the narrative considerably.

I find social media to be nothing but pure poison, and ironically the most anti-social form of communication.

And I agree the Fry quote loses it's point when it is used to justify the offence taken by an insult. For an opinion sure, but to justify and insult, to me that would be cowardice.

If I were to directly insult someone deliberately, (having done so indirectly, unintentionally probably more often than is calculable), I wouldn't belittle Fry by using it. If someone were to take offence to a deliberate insult, a more appropriate response would be, "Well yes, that's how insults work, that's the whole point. Otherwise it wouldn't be a very good insult."

When the system fails you improvise.
The improvisation has been more successful recovering stolen motorcycles than the system.
I canít see anything sinful about that.

Tribal is a community you clown and they worked for centuries/they worked together.....how do you think the indians, aboriginals and european ancestors survived for so long.

Then some dickhead invited cities which only benefited the rulers which then lead to wealthy, look how well thatís going.

    We are becoming narcissistic....

Personal property should be valued if it has no value why should I or anyone else waste there life working when I can flog it like every other drop kick.

Look at the 50s very little theft because there was discipline....the wealthy companies got taxed so there was plenty of jobs.

If you worked hard you could succeed back then.

Didn't Stephen Fry get a bit shitty when it was implied that his Jewish ancestors hesitated leaving Nazi-occupied Europe due to them being probably being well-connected or some such? He was not a happy chappy at all. Offended, some would say... He was also disgusted (rightfully, I think) discovering the desecration of an ancestors' grave and he pondered whether blasphemy laws weren't just for a bygone era. A nuanced living person conveniently reduced to a meme.

His "offended" quote... that old chestnut... it was used on this very forum to tell me and others like me to get over jokes about domestic violence, intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Because if you don't like having your written words called to account, and can't be arsed to frame an argument with your own words, it helps to remember that a popular, charismatic and very witty man once said "so fucking what". The mic-drop will fall out of fashion eventually, but Fry will still be here, I've no doubt.

I'm going to hazard a guess and suggest that Skut was using 'tribal' more in the Lord-of-the-Flies sense. Silo mentality, echo chamber etc. Rather than conventional old-timey indigenous systems of knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong, Skut?
